The Clean Act would ensure that millions of consumers are protected against dirty linens. It is commonsense legislation that would establish clear standards of cleanliness for all local industrial laundries and laundry delivery trucks to protect the health of all city consumers who may come into contact with linens at local hotels, hospitals, doctor’s offices, restaurants, and other businesses.
Some industrial laundry owners and operators regularly cut corners to churn out more products and earn bigger profits, exposing hospital patients and other consumers to risk. While some of these violations are covered by OSHA regulations, there are many loopholes related to consumer protection for hotel guests, restaurant patrons and for patients using industrial laundry products in hospitals, nursing homes, and doctors’ offices. The CLEAN Act will close those loopholes.
Consider bedbugs in hotels. We’re lucky it’s not a bigger crisis. If dirty sheets with bedbugs go to industrial laundries and delivery trucks that don’t use proper cleaning procedures or don’t properly contain used sheets when in the back of the truck, the bedbugs could spread from one hotel to the next, endangering countless consumers.
We are glad that NYC has passed this legislation that protects consumers and raises standards for laundry workers.
